The waters surrounding the Juneau area are a fisherman's playground, boasting all 5 species of pacific salmon as well as trout, rockfish and other finned creatures. With Sea Runner Guide Service, you will most likely be fishing for one of the following 6 species of fish: Dolly Varden, Cutthroat Trout, King Salmon, Chum Salmon, Pink Salmon or Coho Salmon. The biggest factor that determines what kind of fish you will find on the other end of your line is the time of year. Most of the fish that we pursue are known as anadromous fish, meaning they live in both fresh and salt water.
The salmon in particular are born in fresh water, live most of their lives in the salt water, and return to their birthing grounds to spawn. The spawning takes place at different times of year in different streams, depending on the species of salmon. In the Juneau area, King salmon or "Chinooks" are the first to show up and are most abundant in June and early July. Next, the Chum (Dog Salmon) and Pink Salmon (Humpys) return to the streams to spawn. They begin entering the streams in early July and stay through the end of August. Finally the Coho or "Silver" Salmon arrive in late August/early September.
The Dolly Varden live in both fresh and salt water and return to the fresh water to feed on the eggs laid by the spawning salmon. Generally they can be found in many of the streams throughout the summer. Cutthroat Trout, like the Dolly Varden, can live in both fresh and salt water and, can be more of a challenge to catch because of their lesser abundance.
